The Antlers - Hospice

The Antlers is a project spearheaded by Peter Silbermann. Much like Justin Vernon's (Bon Iver) For Emma, Forever Ago, Hospice is a mainly solo project that has morphed into a band. Hospice is a concept album that tells the story of a loved on dying of cancer and the album encapsulates the energy, heart ache and pain that is associated with such heart break. The album is probably one of the easiest albums to latch onto your heart string and will not let go. I would say that the epilogue is obviously one of the most powerful songs, with its transparent pain and heartbreak. Bear is another track that captures the listener and I would say actually reminds me of some of the reflection and urgency of Win Butler. Hospice is an amazing record I have been listening to pretty non-stop the last little while, and as the weather gets cooler and more sombre this is exactly the type of music that is perfect accompaniment. Much like For Emma, Forever Ago, Hospice is an album that was recorded as more of a therapeutic exercise by its songwriter without any intention of greater audiences; and much like Bon Iver, The Antlers have created a beautiful record with delicate vocals and beautiful instrumentation. It is amazing.

Clues - self titled

This album came out a while ago. I bought it I guess in June when they came to Victoria and played Lucky. This album has crept up on me as maybe my favourite album of the year (Vecketamist and Merriwhether Post Pavillion also up there). The album starts with Haarp which starts off slowly and builds up until it explodes. Remember the Severed Head relies on some eerie vocals and stomping percussion to engulf you. The rest of the album is much along the same lines, which is not to say that it is at all monotonous or repetitive. Each song is dfferent enough but all share and eerie feel, sometimes lulling you away and sometimes kicking you in the teeth. Every song shares something but also vary greatly. You Have My Eyes Now and Ledmonton, and Perfect Fit all are anthemic while Elope and more importantly, Let's Get Strong are slower and more reflective. This album is great because its weird and familiar, intense and gentle. Say what you will about Islands, but this is "grown up" Unicorns, and considering we have all grown since Who Will Cut Our Hair When Your Gone it is timely and perfect.

Keds are the best. I rock mine hard, and springtime will require a new pair. I love what Opening Ceremony did to these: not TOO much. They keep a classic aesthetics of the plimsole but add some subtle detailing that makes them better than what everyone else is wearing. And they are still only $65!

Driftwood Brewery White Bark Wheat Ale

I love a good wheat ale, nothing says summer like a delicious light beer in the sun. My former "go to" local craft beer was Phillips Raspberry Wheat Ale, but this recent Canada day found me in the local beer store without my Raspberry Wheat Ale to be found. I decided to go for another local beer. Driftwood Brewery White Bark Wheat Ale is a "traditional Belgian-style wheat ale is brewed with the addition of freshly ground coriander and curacao orange peel. Hops are outshone by the wonderful floral aromas that dominate the nose of this dry and quaffable beer" (from their site). I love the subtly of this beer, with the hints of citrus that basically scream out summertime. A light beer like this won't win over everyone, and its not even the best I have ever had, but it is a refreshing drink that just begs to be picked up on a warm summer day outdoors.

Review: Phoenix - "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix"

I'm a little bit late reviewing this album because, to be honest, I downloaded it about 2 months ago and did not realize it had yet to be released in NA until recently (not admitting anything illegal). This has been one of my constant favourites recently, and on high rotation. The songs have obvious pop appeal, but are interesting enough to not get old easily. Obviously singles like Lisztomania and 1901 are favourites but really every song on the album is strong. Although I usually prefer a bit dirtier, lo fi songs, Phoenix accomplishes a kind of nice mix between clever lyrics with simple enough melodies and pulsing keyboards and drums that make is suitable for listening full blast in a club, or laying on your bed with headphones. Phoenix seems set to be the band of Summer 2009, and hopefully this does not mean by September every song has been played ad nauseum until the magic of this album has not been extinguished. Regardless, it guarantees that summer will be full of good music.

Recently my friends and I were in Portland, and one of our many ventures found us at the renowned VooDoo Donuts. Located in downtown Portland, VooDoo Donuts serves some of the campiest, most fun and delicious donuts I have ever had. Although the wait was unbearable (about one and a half hours) once we got inside the sounds of Weezer's Pinkerton filled the bakery while we decided between donuts with names such as Murder Scene, Grape Ape, The Memphis Mafia to name a few. I decided on the Murder Scene which was a delicious donut filled with red jelly (pictured below). Although the wait was unbearable, it was worth every bite.

When cruising the open road on the motorcycle of your choice proper footwear is necessary to ensure safety. The last thing AoS endorses are "bros" rocking t-shirts, shorts and sneakers while riding their sport bikes. In order to maximize safety and style these two boots options are high on my list. First is the H by Hudson Kaiser boots that I have posted about months ago, it seems they are back at Oak and I am glad. According to Oak they are "the ultimate boot lined in a lux shearling. black leather rounded toe and body. tan suede upper with a buckle front and zipperd back. rubber sole and padded leather footbed". Although they may be a bit toasty in the summer months its definitely worth having something stable on your feet.

The second pair is from one of my favourite's for shoes, Chronices of Never, these Black Skeleton Key Boots look amazing and would be suitable both on the road and in a formal setting - which is the ultimate in Sprezzatura. Although a BMW wagon would be nice, there is something so organic about cruising the roads on a classic motorcycle. Whether its a chopper, bobber, cafe racer or just a classic stock bike it provides a entirely new dimension to the notion of a road trip. I prefer the classic Japanese bikes from the 1970's and early 80's for their classic aesthetics and notorious reliability. Lots of the British bikes like the Triumph are beautiful but also feature some renowned problems (most notably for myself, the cost). This 1979 Suzuki GS425 is an example of a classic beauty that would be great for a day trip down the coast or maybe through the mountains: both of which are beautiful during the summer.

BMW M5 Touring

When embarking on a road trip a station wagon is the ideal choice. Perfect for loading of with as much cargo as needed, and even a sleeping option if you find yourself in a tent without a sleeping bag/mattress. Obviously the M5 Touring is a bit of a fantasy for myself, but seriously, if anyone is going on a long road trip there is not much better then this monster. The Touring offers over 500HP, while providing 1,650 litres of cargo space.

When it comes to sunglasses, classic is pretty much the best way to go. Rayban Wayfarers really are the best all round choice: If you factor in price, style, quality they come up on top every time. But because they are great they are at saturation point, and because of this some other options are good to know. I do prefer the classic styling of the Wayfarer but Moscot's Yukel model and Cheap Monday's line of glasses both offer options that should be considered. The Yukel is one of the best options I have found, and the Cheap Mondays at a fifth of the Yukels price also have benefits. The Persol 2869S and Rayban Clubmaster are also pretty nice choices, as well as the Moscot/Common Projects collaboration.

I had pretty much given up on blogging, ever since being out of an office setting finding the time to blog has been the least of my concerns. But as summer draws closer I figure I may as well awake the beast.
I recently returned from a trip to Portland that was a great little excursion. Nothing feels like summer like a good road trip. So since it is now Summer-Eve, I find it fitting to start posting again about some things which I consider essentials for the summer: whether its the right outfit for a trip in the car, the car its self or maybe some suggestions of places worth travelling to AoS will be dropping science like Galileo dropped the orange.

I must say that Jian is one of the best radio hosts in the entire universe, and was able to handle the recent situation with Slingblade as well as could be expected. Slingblade on the other hand is no King of Spain but might be well served having a slice of humble pie.

It has been a while since I have posted anything new, I guess I have been uninspired and bored with posting numerous pieces of clothing etc that I will probably never own. Considering I currently don't have a job, consumerism seems futile. Although this blog is never really intended to be groundbreaking or overly unique, it is a collection of things that I like. Things I think are noteworthy, beautiful and unique. The new short film-music video directed by Kevin Drew of BSS delivers. The inspiration is the song The Water by Feist, and features the bad guy from Batman (Cillian Murphy). I am drawn by the desolate tone of the film, and was very interested in the story being told. Because of this, I feel it is necessary to post the video on here.

Cursive "From the Hips" on David Letterman

I have never been a huge fan of Cursive, but this performance on Letterman blows the roof off. "From the Hips" is from Cursive's new album Mama, I'm Swollen and is one of the best tracks off the record. Although I have never really gotten into Cursive in the past this album is very strong and has got me to take another look at the 7 or so other albums from this Saddle Creek band. I would say that other then "From the Hips", "I Couldn't Love Your Anymore", "Donkeys", "Caveman", "We're Going to Hell", "Mamma I'm Swollen" and "What Have I Done" are some of the better track. Mixing reflective lyrics about religions and existence with a nice composition melding soft and hard in a way that outlines the typical emo formula makes Mama, I'm Swollen an undaring yet enjoyable album.

I have created a soundtrack that mashes up, remixes and repackages some very important and influential moments in modern history into a piece that is meant to evoke memories of both the real and unreal. A major part of the project was to include tracks from both the “real”, through clips of speeches, historical events etc with the “unreal”, through select clips from TV and movies references that I believe to be engrained within pop culture. The blending and mixing of the real and unreal was my hope to blur the boundaries. The sound bite is sort of the analog to the picture; a picture is a skewed or biased memory of an event but is often the only memory we will have. Most of the “important” events that I included were things that I have only experienced through sound bites: in many regards, Kramer’s words or Homer’s words are more real than Martin Luther King, Malcolm X or Neil Armstrong’s moon walk.
Some parts of the clips I edited in a manner that they may not instantly seem familiar. By removing the context of several quotes, or pairing them with other events it creates new realities.
At the intro of the project, I begin with George Bush Sr., speaking about the death of communism and the collapse of the Soviet Empire. This moment can be understood as the victory of the American way; the “American dream”. While that clips is playing, the voice over of the news report announcing the death of JFK begins. This is an intentional “double voice” that parallels the announcement of the death of communism with the death of Kennedy. Kennedy is important in understanding, because it is one of the most tragic events in the American psyche. It plays out as sort of a “win” and a “loss” for America.
The track goes on to include a quote of Malcolm X, in which he refers to the “American dream” as an “American nightmare”. This quote is used mostly out of context (he, referring to the narrative of African-Americans), as it is used as foreshadowing the next clip. The clip that follows is George Bush Jr. announcing the attacks of Sept 11. To me, with Kennedy’s death, is considered one of the saddest days in modern American history: The “American nightmare”.
The first part of the track all goes on while the “2001: A Space Odyssey” music plays. I chose this song because it is epic, grandiose and very familiar. It frames the first part of the soundtrack, in which George Bush Sr. and Jr. are the bookends.
At this point, I take the track to a little bit more lighthearted place, while still maintaining the theme of the project. Part 2 of this project begins with Einstein, with a low quality clip of him announcing his mass-energy equivalence equation. While the Einstein clips plays music begins. The music plays throughout the rest of the piece. The music is a combination of a steady, simple beat with somewhat off kilter, off-time synthesizers. The purpose of the music is two fold, basically it allows for a steady narrative through the rest of the piece, but is intentionally not syncopated. The music is intended to at a textured layer in which the sound clips are played. The use of synthesizers gives a technological feel to the song and creates a somewhat cerebral juxtaposition with the words heard.
The song moves on to include more pop culture references. Often lighthearted these more are intended to provide a more instantaneous response: bouncing between the real and unreal, while evoking the thoughts that may be associated with these events. The overall track is a somewhat schizophrenic run through of a multitude of themes and events. There is no real underlying narrative throughout, in a lot of ways it doesn’t make sense, and it is not really supposed to. The purpose of having short, mostly familiar clips is something of an exercise of emotions while also challenging to meaning of what is heard.

This look from the Sartorialist is amazing (ft Jeezy). I Just love the suit, the tie, the shirt and the posture for that matter. Something about a gentleman mixing elegant/casual so well. He is just at a cafe in Paris having a good time. The unstructured collar makes the suit a lot more wearable in casual situations while still looking sharp. The only miss is the sneakers (a bit overdone ever since Letterman did it on the ), but they can be forgiven because I'm sure a man at his age is making a bit more of a statement then the Late Night With David Letterman Show). Altogether, well done. I only hope James is wearing something like this while he sits at Cafes.

Metchosin House by Marko Simcic

This house is interesting for a few different reasons. Most notably the $24 million dollar (US) price tag, and the fact that its located in my home town. Other then that it is also a pretty amazing building.

Obviously the design is impeccable; including a river that runs through it, reflective glass. The "outer perimeter walls of the home are clad in vertical tongue-and-groove White Oak, while the walls rising from the linear reflecting pool are clad with glass etched in a pattern mimicking the White Oak".

Vancouver architect Marco Simcic design is what Canadian Architect says: "Simcic explores the "big" as a domain of almost limitless potential and diversity, where each moment is explored in its own micro context. This is, of course, a fine line to tread, as at what point should the singularity of the whole project supercede the expression of a series of differentiated elements? On these terms, one is tempted to think that the home would benefit from an architectural edit: to be a bit simpler, to be a bit less varied. Nonetheless, the agility of the Metchosin House emphasizes the difficulty in assessing the expansion of a culture's footprint on a square-foot basis alone and at its strongest, reveals the power of research and performative-based design." The design definitely could be simpler, but it is beautiful and highlights the beauty of the aread. It doesn't hurt that its on 67 acres of ocean front property and is juxtaposed nicely with the wilderness around it. Now if only Kanye can buy it and higher me and Doug as members of his entourage.

Wale: Mixtape About Nothing

Although this mixtape was released nearly a year ago, it is one of the most frequently listened to albums on my ipod right now. I have heared Wale being compared to a "concious Lil Wayne" or something like that; although I'm not sure the comparison is apt, I appreciate the mix of comedy into the production. Humour is often overlooked in much of rap, but the allusions to Seinfeld are a good mix and keeps the tracks interesting while still being rooted in good rhymes. Since I have been late on posts, it seems a good time too post about nothing rather then post nothing.

Vallie Componenents look set to drop these burly look track hubs. I saw em over at CyclingWMD and according to Alan: "The hubs are easily the strongest, most solid ones I've ever seen for built for tracks bikes. Sitting one of them down next to a Phil Wood hub really shows you just how brutal they are. The flanges are taller, thicker and the bolts are HUGE! Bearings are wicked smooth too! I sincerely doubt there's any other track hub out there right now that's anywhere near as durable as this one"
Because of my utilitarianist in me appreciates such a beefy strong hub, and the high flange and simple design is esthetically pleasing as well.

I read about the bright new looks over at Refinery 29 a few weeks ago and was hesitant to post anything. But considering bright colours, especially blue, seem to be a major trend this spring I decided to post a couple of my favourite bright designs from Gram. The Gram 321g Triple Combo Plimsoles are a great mix of colour while maintain the classic lines associated with plimsoles and the 385g Canvas Plimsoles in all blue is another great offering in the blue shoe department that is become pretty saturated this spring, eg Kitsuné x Pierre Hardy, Rachel Comey etc. These Gram shoes offer some great standout shoe options that would work with either an otherwise muted outfit, or a multi-coloured look that is liberal with different hues, patterns and pieces.

Royal Enfield is a motorcycle company based out of Chenai, India and offer up some great bikes, with classic styling at a great price. "The Royal Enfield Bullet, in its present form, was first introduced in Britain in 1949 as a 350cc bike. It incorporated an innovative design element: swing arm suspension. This feature along with its extremely strong single cylinder engine allowed it to excel as a trials bike. The 500cc model was introduced in Britain during the 1950's, winning hundreds of races. This brought the Bullet international recognition and orders came into the factory in Redditch, England from all over the world."

One hour’s drive from Innsbruck, the Stubai Glacier offers a large variety of mountain climbs and hikes. The aim of the newly erected platform is therefore mainly the revival of seasonal and summer tourism.
During the winter season the platform can be accessed the weather conditions permitting. The mountain station Schaufeljoch at 3180 metres above sea level is reached via the mountain station.The path to the mountain peak platform starts from the funicular. One climbs up a number of steps to the ridge leading to the Great Isidor. After another 70 meters walk through natural landscape one arrives at the platform. The platform is a steel construction made from weather resistant steel.

The construction principle of the girder grate is an unstructured grid. The twisted, excrescent swords of Corten sheet steel are box section beams with a triangular cross-section. The standing girders to the rear of the foundations are supported by reinforcement strips. Between the 50 cm tall supports there is the floor of grating.The arched railing is monolithic. Recently went on a bit of an ebay bender and came up with some great wins and came short on a couple losses. I missed out on a couple decent track bike frames that I could not justify; altough I really regret not bidding on a NJS Bridgestone keirin frame, with NJS headset, bottom bracket, stem, crank and bars included that only went for $550, and another Easter European track frame that could of been nice. Alas I decided right now was not the right time to drop 500+ bucks on a new bike frame. Also lost out on a pair of Velocity Deep V rims for a little over a hundred was disappointing loss that would of been perfect for a wheelset build that I want to do soon. Another loss was a awesome pair of Schmoove "Charlie Boots" that could of been a great steal had it not been for the reserve price placed too high. In the win section is a couple bow ties, some leather double toe straps, a Diatech Gold Finger brake lever for my bike, and a Viktor & Rolf (for H&M) Tweed blazer for a steal. Hopefully mailman santa will come soon and I can post some of the great pieces that I won!

Another reason to want to visit Iceland. The Hof residence was designed Studio Granda. Hof is a country residence in the Skagafjörður fjord, less than 100km from the Arctic Circle. The existing assemblage of buildings on the estate included a house, church, barn and cowshed clustered on a riverbank. Further inland are recently constructed horse stables. The wide fjörd has a mountainous rim punctuated with long valleys embracing the cliff islands of Drangey, Málmey and the graphic foreland Þórðarhöfði. The new residence is slightly removed from the old cluster on raised ground, with each room and space orientated to capture this magnificent panorama. Externally the house rises from the tufted site as a series of sheer cedar and concrete walls that will weather according to the vagaries of the elements. The displaced grass of the field is reinstated on the roof and the surrounding meadow is cut and folded in earthworks of turf and stone that open ways to the entrance and terraces. Telegraph poles salvaged from the site were used as a sun/privacy screen to south-facing windows.
Most internal walls are of raw or painted concrete and the ceilings, doors and other carpentry are predominately of oiled sawn oak with steel details; a rustic palette offset by smooth painted planes.
The house is highly insulated and thermally stable due to the massive concrete walls, stone floors and balanced fenestration. Geothermal water is used for the floor heating and radiators as well as for all domestic use. Review: Animal Collective - "Merriweather Post Pavillion"

I was a little bit hesitant writing a review for the new Animal Collective. Partially, because I still feel as though Strawberry Jam and Panda Bear's Person Pitch are still pretty high in my rotation and wasn't yearning for a new AC record as much as everyone else. Because of this I was a bit hesitant giving it a fair listen; I was dumb to do it. Obviously "My Girls" had circulated through the interweb for a while, and I was and still am a big fan of that song. But i was very hesitant that the whole album would be as strong. I don't really know why I doubted it, because ever since AC has moved towards pop music, I have pretty much loved everything they have put out. I was especially fond of Panda Bear's Person Pitch because I felt that it really captured the wall of sound, reminiscent of 60's baroque pop, ala Pet Sounds etc. I think I was partially expecting this album to go a little bit away from the pop sensibilities that AC has been developing, back to their earlier albums that are much more challenging to listen to, and not my favourite stuff. With Merriweather Post Pavillion, Animal Collective is able to refine the pop style of their music without sacrificing the interesting blend that makes their music unique. To say that any Animal Collective album is "pop" is by far oversimplifying, but MPP is some of the most accessible AC out there, but still begs to be listened to on repeat to catch everything that's happening.

Oscar Review: The Wrestler

Darren Aronofsky's "The Wrestler" is a film that is widely touted as resurrecting Mickey Rourke's career. What is often overlooked is the manner in which Rourke's performance so perfectly showcases the plight of a desperate man. The reason Rourke's role as Randy "The Ram" Robinson is so interesting because it is easy to draw the similarities between the "has been" Robinson and the "has been" Rourke. When you watch the life that "The Ram" has crumbled into; that of a joke, a loser, a failure - it is easy to believe that this is all too familiar for boxer-turned Actor-turned boxer- turned actor, Rourke. What is surprising is how likeable The Ram is. For all intents and purposes, it would be easy to watch this movie and find The Ram to be a sad, pathetic, loser; and he is: He is also someone you want to cheer for. Maybe it is the close parallels between Rourke; a once promising young actor, considered by many to an actor that would follow the path paved by the likes of Brando and De Niro, but failed to live up to the expectations cast upon him. Although the life of Randy the Ram is far from traditional, it comes apparent in as the film moves forward that he is not as easy to vilify and dismiss as it seemed. Although the life of a former wrestler is hyperbolic, it maintains an air of truth in humanity. What makes the Wrestler the most interesting is not the freak show effect of watching the backstage life of a modern day court jester, it is the fact that Aronofsky is able to paint a picture in which we can all relate to. That of a man that has tried his best at life, but came up short.

I was checking out Gravity Pope's website today, and noticed a few pairs of lace-ups that would be a good addition for the spring. The use of bright colour, especially blue is pretty topical, as is the meshed leather lace-ups. I think it was men.style, that had a posting about perforated dress shoes too. These guys look like nice options. The red ones are something that I probably would not wear very often, but none the less are pretty awesome; same goes for the blue. Refinery 29 recently had a posting about some royal blue shoes - most of which arent really accessible and the black ones are refined and would work casually or formally.

Some hightlights and lowlights: I'm not sure how I feel about McCartney being there; sure he is a legend, but unless he is playing Beatles songs, I dunno how interesting it would be. It is pretty awesome that Morrissey and Leonard Cohen are playing (probably enought to bring people in by themselves). It is disapointing how low Public Enemy is billed; they are legends - no doubt they have lost some esteem since Flavor of Love. Bands I would lovet to see include Beirut, Band of Horses, TV on the Radio, Okkervil River, Junior Boys to name a few. April is a good time for a road trip, if only I had a nice car.

I posted about the Logic Bolt a while ago, and since projector phones in my mind are the wave of the future I feel required to post this bad boy. I have been looking for a new bag that I am able to use for work. Something that is big enough to carry whatever I need while still looking decent, but also something I can use when I bike. My shoulder bag right now is a bit too big to be comfortable on the bike, but my only other option is a back pack which looks ridiculous off the bike. I want something that is functional while still looking food. The thought of wearing a Chrome messenger bag or anything like that into an office is as bad as a back pack, but my other bags just don't work that well on a bike. Review: Olympus E-410

A Few weeks ago, I received my Olympus E-410 digital slr in the mail and have been very happy with the purchase. I was hesitant purchasing something other then a Nikon or Canon for an entry level slr, but after some closer comparison, realized that the Olympus would best suit my needs. Although similar cameras such as the Canon XS have 7 point AF - I found that my old XT was sometimes finnicky in finding focus in dim lit areas), I have found that the Olympus' 3 point AF is more then adequate in capturing sharp shot in any situation (and with 4/3rd lens system, it is much more versatile in lens selection). In actual practice, I find that the E-410 is great because it packs a lot into a small package. The 10mp camera is the smallest on the market, but still has the ability take a great shot. Although I have yet to really take advantage of the camera and test some of its ranges, but so far I have been very happy with the little guy. The live view as well as the display menu are intuitive and make it easy to take a great picture. I hope to get some more use out of this unit soon, and will provide updates. Recently I have been looking for some bow ties. I wear ties to work everyday and have gotten a little bored with my lineup; anyway, the only bow tie I have is black, so its a bit too formal for work. My job is still pretty casual so I'm looking for some options that will work. I really don't know where in Victoria, other then Club Monaco, where a decent bow tie can be found - it seems most online shops I'm familiar with don't carry them/or they are sold out. I have seen a couple good ones on Ebay, but yet t pull the trigger. Anyway, I'm hoping I might be able to find some online sources/shops in Victoria that I can get some decent bow ties without breaking the bank. Any help?

PGO Hemera and Speedster 2

I'm not much of a car guy, but I appreciate good design and have a love of vintage European sports cars; especially Porsche's. I have always wanted an old Porsche, I remember as a kid, my dad, brother and I were down at a car dealership. My dad was looking for a new car, but I was instantly drawn to a 1956 Porsche Speedster that was on the lot. The sticker price was significantly lower then the lame Ford Focus that he ended getting, but I guess it wasn't practical enough for the family, geesh. Although this PGO Hemera and PGO Speedster 2 aren't quite as cool as the real deal, the borrow their design influence from the Porsche 356. PGO is a French company that makes handmade, small production runs of these babies. The Hemera is the newest model, set to debut next year. It features a 2.0L Peugeot motor and a 5 speed manual gearbox. I found these while looking up vintage Porsche's, after reading a post on Tod's Driving Moccasins over at 84/85. It's pretty cool these take the vintage stylings of the original Porsche models and add a modern twist to produce something both classic and new; something we see in the fashion world all the time. Although the PGO doesn't seem to stack up with a real Porsche, it definitely looks more appealing then a lot of the kit cars that are out there.

I remember first hearing this song when I was 12 and my cousin, sick of me listening to the pop punk bands of the time, exposed me to Propagandhi's "How To Clean Everything". This album still goes down as one of my all time favourites, if not simply because of the nostalgia: Being a rightous, 13 year old kid living in the suburbs, thinking I know everything. In all seriousness, I remember this track because it was one of the first political songs I ever heard that didnt stem from my parents folk collections. I was used to Dylan, Baez and Seeger spout politically driven stuff, but this was the first time I had heard something so overt, punk and in your face with a politcal message and was my first exposure to the Middle East conflicts. I thought it would be good posting this because of the troubles currently going on in Gaza, and this song provides a bit of a crash course in the conflict, albeit in a bit of a cynical manner. These are ridiculous. I like Thom Browne and I like Converse and I like the collaboration. For Converse' 100 year anniversary they commisioned the likes of Thom Browne, Libertine and Mastermind to do their own interpretation of Con's. The Brown version highlighted below look kind of neat, a reinterpretation of the Jack Purcell. What makes these bad boys ridiculous is not the impressive use of Browne's signature red, white and blue to make a fly looking shoe; what is absolutely ridiculous is the price tag. I have wanted a home espresso machine for a while but have hummed and hawed whether an automatic home machine or a more manual machine would be best, and more importantly if my diminutive counter space could handle another appliance. The advantage of an automatic machine is the obvious: its automatic, basically you can just press a button and presto! you get your coffee ready to go. But if you factor in the cost of the machine it doesn't really justify the purchase when there is 5 coffee shops, literally a stones throw from my house. I, as well as many other much more technologically knowledgeable people, have been saying for quite a while that the future of mobile phone system are a couple things. One is flexible circuit boards that allow for devices be much more ergonomically designed (eg on one's arm or what have you), the other is a phone that has the capability as a projector. Gitman Bros Oxford

I have been on the look out for good oxford shirts for a while. I would ideally have a solid lineup of white, blue and grey. I have had a generic blue oxford for a while and it is ok, and recently was pleasantly surprised with a white number from Club Monaco that features a very thick, nearly canvas fabric. I think finding a strong grey oxford will be very difficult. I went into a local shop today and checked out Shades of Greige and Ransom interpretations but neither were near the ideal, classic simplicity that I need in an oxford. Roden Gray in Vancouver may have hit it in the blue department with this Gitmans Brothers oxford. I saw this shirt on their site a month or so ago and thought it looked really good, but not until this most recent, uneventful shopping trip did I find it necessary to post. Although these boots by H by Hudson are not exactly new I decided that I should post them anyway. These boots are definitely on my very long short list. According to Oak: "the ultimate winter boot lined in a lux shearling, black leather rounded toe and body, tan suede upper with a buckle front and zipperd back, rubber sole and padded leather footbed". I like the classic yet unique modern take these Kaiser Boots have. Im not sure if I have anything in my wardrobe that would really make these work, but they seem the perfect boots to wear with some heavy weight raw denim, buffalo check shirt and on top of a BMW cafe race through the hills of France.

These jammies from Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair are the perfect gloves for hired assasins, motorbikers, or anyone that wants to add some bad ass attitude to their wardrobe. Although they are not really my bag, I prefer my gloves a bit more classic, any time a staple such as leather gloves are reinvented in a manner that turns them into killers it's noteworthy. I decided to switch directions from Canon, and purchased an Olympus E-410. Im pretty excited about the camera, its a pretty basic 10Mp DSLR, which is all I really need. The setup comes with 2 lenses, both a 14-42mm and 40-150 lense. The body is pretty neat, its a bit more retro styled then other DSLR's, alot smaller and more compact then the Canon or the Nikon I was looking at. It should make it good for sliding in my bag without taking up too much room. I'm pretty excited to get this bad boy and give it a proper review.

New Camera?

Now that the new year is coming, I am in the market for a new DSLR. I used to have the Canon XT until some junkie decided they wanted it more and broke into my house and stole it. I got the XT a few months earlier second hand and was pretty happy with it but noticed a few glitches and some issues that are inherent with second hand electronics. Because of the previous issues I feel as though my next purchase should be a brand new product, which is a bit intimidating because of the cost. My main camera of interest is Canon's entry level DSLR, the XS. Its a substantial step up from the XT, which was the entry level canon a few years ago. The XS is pretty comparable to the XSi with a couple less megapixels and 2 less AF points. The XS features live view function and a couple different AF modes.
Im still not 100% if I should pull the trigger, or if I should maybe try a used 20D. To be honest I would of pulled the trigger on the XS this Boxing Day if it weren't for a maxed out credit card. I could probably get the 20D for a little bit less, but the idea of a used body makes me a bit freaked out. The XT I had, was plagued with "error 99 occasionally and the auto focus was a bit hazy. I imagine a 20D and the XS would both provide crisper shots. I have also been looking at a high-end point and shoot, something like a Panasonic Lumix lx-3 with Leica lens looks like it can take really nice pictures while maintaining the simplicity of a point and shoot. Ideally I would get a Canon 5D Mark II, and the LX-3. But Money is an option so it seems that the XS, with warranty etc is the best bet. If anyone has any feedback, or options that would be great. I really just want a dependable body that is not already outdated technology and a 50mm f1.8 lens to take indoor candid pictures.

Winter Outfit

Since I cannot get over how cold it has been in Victoria recently I decided to post a winter outfit. Something I wish I had, especially waiting for the bus outside for 20 minutes on the way to school. Alot of this stuff are things I probably wouldnt wear unless it was below freezing, but considering I wore two hoodies, two pairs of socks, jeans, my toggle jacket and old hightops to school today definitely tells me I don't have nearly the right stuff for this kind of weather.
Start off with a hat. This toque from Seattle based company Coal will work. available at Blackbird.

This Branson jacket from Moncler can handle the cold. Although in regular condictions Moncler can come off "bro-ish", if the weather conditions call for it - its what you should be wearing.

This cardigan just looks right for the snow. Pattern knitted cardigan from Arne & Carlos. Fantastic knitted alpaca / wool cardigan from Norwegian design duo Arne & Carlos. Red Buffalo Check flannel shirt from Old Navy, nothing too special just a soft warm shirt that would keep me warm, and ad a little bit of lumberjack into the outfit.

I replace the Yigal Azrouel pants with some that work better. These Opening Ceremony slacks are part of a suit but also can be purchased separately. These Outdoor Flannel Suit Pants feature Flat front four-pocket trouser. Two single-welt angled pockets with zipper closure on front. Back pockets with zipper and button closure. Unlined with finished hem. 80% wool, 20% cashmere, 100% cotton lining. Made in the U.S.A. These would be cozy in the snow while still looking refined. Available at Blackbird.

Leather shoe from Siv Stoldal. Siv is very much about the work wear tradition from Norway and this shoe is made in a collaboration with classic quality shoe brand "Dale Sko", experts on shoes for the working man. Leather upper and rubber sole. Closed with a zipper on the inside. I was looking at these guys when I was shopping for some decent boots and a couple things bothered me. I didnt really like the leather treatment it looks a little synthetic, and I wasn't a huge fan of the white soles. For the snow and salt and slush though I think a leather boot such as this would work great, and the white soles would be lost in the snow.

Kanye West : Heartless on SNL

Kanye West performed Heartless and Love Lockdown on SNL last night. Usually posting anything from NBC is a complete chore and gets pulled down instantly but I thought that this was worth the burden.
This performance is on another level for SNL. Think of all the uninspired performances you usually see on on SNL, this is insane. Kanye seems to have really improved his performing skills in the last bit, including some dance moves. This is very reminiscent of old James Brown and even a little Mick Jagger. Kanye in my mind does something unique. Its not very difficult to see lesser known groups or performers really show emotion on stage but with the rise of Emo, Emocore and Hardcore into mainstream we experience a lot of faux emotion that comes of very much insincere. Its also not very difficult to see pop artists/rappers that fail to resonate any type of emotion while performing the hits. Lots of artists really do express their emotions and really connect with their performances, but its very rare to see that in pop music. Kanye does it.

I was out Christmas shopping today and ran into my friend Kevin at Outlooks here in Victoria . It had been a while since I had seen Kevin, but he has started a blog that he told me about. Its called 84/85 and its pretty neat. Lots of good content about some of my favourite things. Its really alot like this blog, but way better. I recommend you visit it (and when I saw "you" I guess I really mean me, cause I dont know who else reads this, lol.... rofl!...LOLROFLLOLROFL). Now, I tell you (me) about this blog, not because I want you to stop visiting, Missouri, but because this blog is supposed to share neat things... so there!

Im pretty sure that I will be selling my Nudie Jeans Thin Finn Dry Organic Ecru Embo jeans in the near future cause they arent fitting like I would like. The question arises which denim should replace them. I think I have kinda moved on past Nudies, although I still really like the Thin Finn fit as well as a couple other Nudie fits but I am finding them so common in Victoria that they are getting a bit played out. I think I will be investing in a new pair of raw denim and am lookinging a few option of denim that appeals to me.
First is a pair of jeans from Blackbird in Seattle, these arent raw and are more an honourable mention as I already have some black coated jeans but since Blackbird always stays on top I though I should promote their first pair designed and made exclusively for the store... they are available here.

These are Joey Overdrive from April 77 which is a french label, like APC but a bit more punk rock. They are a solid choice for raw denim in a cut I like, they are very simple jeans with tonal stitching and couple exposed rivets on the front and back pockets. Pretty nice, a bit unique and cheaper then others at $145US available at Blackbird, here.

A.P.C. New Cure Jeans, not exactly unique pretty popular, but pretty simple. They are great raw denim at a decent cut. I have seen New Cure's look really good and really bad. I think the key is getting the right size, they are vanity sized so usually its necessary to drop a few sizes to get em right. These are probably the most likely option because they are available in town, and buying jeans online is usually not worth the risk.

This shoulder bag from Billykirk is just about all anyone needs. Its simple, well designed and well made. Its Billykirk's reinterpretation of a WW2 Belgian map case, fitted to be bit bigger so your laptop or notebook will fit in perfectly. It also reminds me of the old leather cases that polaroid cameras came in. The only downside is that it would't fit an SLR camera.

Fashion Inpiration: Mr Burns

One look I have been hoping to replicate is that of Mr. Burns' outfit from The Simpsons episode 'Burns' Heir'. I haven't been able to find a still picture of the outfit, but im sure some of you may remember it. The episode is the one in which Mr. Burns is looking for an heir to his fortune, and he pops on screen at the beginning of a movie. He is standing in a field and he is wearing a royal blue suit, a brown bowler hat, a grey shirt and an orange bowtie. I don't know if i have the time, the money, or the guys to actually go through with it (especially now that I have revealed my source). And considering I can't even find a picture of the outfit, I doubt I will been able to find the items. A suit in the colour of blue I am thinking of may be tough. The bowler hat is not really necessary, but even a good orange club bowtie would be hard. Band of Outsiders just released a bow tie that would work well, and they, as well as a million other people have good grey button downs. The blue suit, I think will have to be a thrift store find. Considering it would have to be a one or two button suit, the chances of getting the right colour would be tough, but if did it before you know it I would be singing "lets all go to the lobby, lets all go to the lobby, lets all go to the lobby, and get ourselves a snack!".
